Occasionally facilitators review a FOCCUS® Inventory and notice something surprising:
Very few differences.
Or even near-total agreement across the inventory.
New facilitators sometimes assume this means: “Wonderful — this couple has no concerns.”
Experienced facilitators often recognize something important:
High agreement still deserves thoughtful conversation.
At FOCCUS®, we often remind facilitators that the goal of the inventory is not simply agreement.
The goal is meaningful conversation, reflection, and deeper understanding.
That distinction matters deeply.
Why This Matters
Sometimes high agreement truly reflects:
- strong communication
- healthy alignment
- emotional maturity
- thoughtful preparation
- similar values and expectations
That can certainly happen.
But occasionally, extremely high agreement may also reflect:
- rushing through the inventory
- limited reflection
- discomfort with disagreement
- unrealistic assumptions
- answering based on what “sounds right”
- fear of conflict
- people-pleasing tendencies
Facilitators should avoid jumping to conclusions in either direction.
The goal is not suspicion.
The goal is thoughtful exploration.
Agreement Does Not Always Equal Understanding
Two people may answer similarly without having deeply discussed the topic itself.
For example, couples may both agree with statements involving:
- finances
- parenting
- faith
- communication
- conflict
…but still hold very different assumptions underneath those answers.
Sometimes couples realize during facilitation:
- they interpreted statements differently
- they had not fully discussed practical implications
- they assumed agreement meant complete understanding
That is why conversation still matters — even when scores appear highly aligned.
Start with the Key Issue Indicators
One helpful strategy when facilitating couples with very high agreement is to begin with the Key Issue Indicator section of the Facilitator Report.
The Key Issue Indicators highlight some of the most important statements within the inventory and often create excellent opportunities for deeper conversation.
These statements help facilitators move beyond:
- surface-level agreement
- quick answers
- assumptions
Even couples who appear highly aligned often benefit from slowing down and discussing these important areas more intentionally.
Starting with the Key Issue Indicators can help facilitators:
- establish deeper conversation early
- encourage thoughtful reflection
- identify whether agreement reflects true understanding
- uncover areas needing additional discussion
Sometimes couples discover:
- they truly are strongly aligned
- one person interpreted a statement differently
- assumptions had not been fully discussed
- certain topics deserved more practical conversation
That process is valuable.
High Agreement Often Requires More Facilitation Skill
One important reality for facilitators is this:
Sessions with highly aligned couples sometimes require more intentional facilitation — not less.
Why?
Because facilitators often need to work harder to encourage:
- reflection
- elaboration
- practical examples
- emotional discussion
- deeper exploration
Couples may initially answer:
“We agree.”
“That’s not really an issue.”
“We already talked about that.”
Healthy facilitators gently continue the conversation.
Suggested Questions
- “What helped the two of you become aligned in this area?”
- “How do you see this playing out practically in marriage?”
- “Can you give an example?”
- “What conversations helped shape your thinking?”
- “How might this topic become more challenging during stressful seasons?”
These questions often create richer and more meaningful discussion.
The Sessions May Take Longer
Facilitators sometimes assume highly aligned couples will move through the process more quickly.
In reality, meaningful facilitation may actually require:
- slower pacing
- additional follow-up questions
- more intentional reflection
- deeper exploration of practical application
That is healthy.
The goal is not speed.
The goal is meaningful conversation.
Sometimes couples who initially appear fully aligned discover important nuances only after thoughtful discussion begins.
Healthy Facilitators Stay Curious
When couples show very high agreement, facilitators should remain:
- calm
- curious
- attentive
- thoughtful
Avoid:
- celebrating too quickly
- assuming “everything is perfect”
- rushing through the report
- skipping important discussion areas
Instead, continue helping couples reflect thoughtfully and intentionally.
Cover Additional Categories Too
While the Key Issue Indicators are an excellent place to begin, facilitators should still review additional sections of the report as well.
Important conversations may still emerge within:
- communication
- finances
- family expectations
- faith
- intimacy
- parenting
- conflict styles
Sometimes meaningful concerns appear outside the Key Issue Indicators.
Healthy facilitation includes balanced discussion across the inventory rather than focusing only on scores or highlighted areas.
Watch for Overconfidence Too
Occasionally couples with very high agreement may unintentionally assume:
- marriage will feel easy
- conflict will rarely happen
- communication problems are unlikely
- strong relationships require little ongoing work
Facilitators can gently encourage realistic expectations without creating fear.
Suggested Phrase
“Strong alignment is a wonderful strength. Healthy marriages also continue growing through communication, attentiveness, and ongoing conversation over time.”
This helps couples remain:
- hopeful
- grounded
- realistic
- intentional
Strong Couples Still Benefit from Facilitation
One important reminder for facilitators:
Couples do not need major disagreement to benefit from FOCCUS®.
Healthy facilitation strengthens:
- awareness
- intentionality
- communication
- emotional connection
- future planning
Even highly aligned couples often benefit from slowing down and discussing important areas more deeply.
That reflection strengthens relationships.
Use the Facilitator Guide to Go Deeper
When couples show strong agreement across the inventory, discussion aids become especially valuable.
The Facilitator Only Inventory Guide helps facilitators:
- move beyond simple answers
- ask deeper follow-up questions
- encourage thoughtful reflection
- explore practical application
- create meaningful conversation
The goal is not to “find problems.”
The goal is deeper understanding.
Helpful Reminder
FOCCUS® is not a compatibility test.
And it is not about achieving perfect scores.
It is a conversation tool designed to strengthen awareness, communication, and intentional preparation for marriage.
Meaningful conversation still matters — even when couples agree on almost everything.
Facilitator Encouragement
If you encounter a couple with very high agreement, do not panic — and do not rush.
Stay curious. Stay attentive. Keep facilitating thoughtful conversation.
Often these sessions become wonderful opportunities to help couples:
- deepen understanding
- strengthen communication
- clarify expectations
- build stronger long-term habits
And sometimes the healthiest conversations happen not because couples disagree strongly, but because they slow down long enough to explore why they agree.
