Who this is for…

Engaged Couples

Couples preparing for marriage

Married couples seeking growth

Every person brings expectations into marriage—often shaped by family, culture, faith, and personal experience. When expectations remain unspoken, they can quietly lead to frustration or misunderstanding.

This conversation is an invitation to name expectations with honesty and to approach differences with curiosity and care.

  • Focus on listening, not fixing
  • Differences are normal; respect comes first

If You Discover Differences

  • Remember: differences are not a failure
  • Ask, “Can you help me understand?”
  • Look for shared values, not perfect agreement

Conversation Questions

  1. What expectations about marriage did you learn growing up?
  2. What expectations do you have about communication and handling conflict?
  3. How do you define a “successful” marriage?
  4. Where do you think our expectations align? Where might they differ?
  5. How can we talk about expectations with patience, respect, and love when they change over time?

Closing Reflection

Expectations will continue to evolve throughout marriage. What matters most is not having identical expectations, but having a shared way to talk about them with honesty and grace.

Optional Closing Prayer

God of love, help us grow in understanding and compassion. Teach us to speak truthfully, listen generously, and walk together in patience and faith. Amen.
