Clergy Corner: For Pastors & Deacons

Many engaged couples become anxious when they discover areas of difference.

Different expectations. Different communication styles. Different family experiences. Different approaches to money, conflict, faith, or decision-making.

Some couples immediately wonder:

“Does this mean something is wrong?”

In reality, differences are normal.

One of the important pastoral tasks of marriage preparation is helping couples understand that difference itself is not the problem.

The real question is whether couples can approach differences with honesty, humility, and teamwork.

Marriage is not built on sameness

Strong marriages are not formed because two people agree on everything.

Strong marriages are formed because two people learn how to:

  • communicate respectfully
  • listen patiently
  • seek understanding
  • repair after conflict
  • remain committed through difficulty

Difference often becomes the place where love matures.

Why FOCCUS helps

FOCCUS® gives couples language for conversations they might otherwise avoid.

It helps couples recognize:

  • where they align naturally
  • where they differ
  • where expectations may need clarification
  • where future growth may be needed

Most importantly, it helps couples discuss these areas before stress increases later in marriage.

A healthier perspective for couples

One of the most helpful reframes clergy can offer is this:

“Differences are not a sign that your relationship is failing. They are an invitation to grow together.”

That perspective reduces fear and encourages maturity.

Helping couples move from fear to formation

Some couples approach preparation worried they may discover something difficult.

Yet honest preparation is not meant to create fear.

It is meant to strengthen awareness, communication, and trust.

When couples know how to discuss differences well, they are better equipped to navigate future challenges with grace.

Thank you for accompanying couples

Thank you for helping engaged couples approach marriage with honesty, hope, and confidence.

Your encouragement reminds couples that growth is possible and that the Church walks with them in their vocation.
